A recent surge in vehicle burglaries in Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills is prompting a warning today from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
Most of the thefts are occurring in residential neighborhoods as the burglars target purses, laptop computers, portable GPS devices, cell phones, and other personal electronics. They are hitting locked and unlocked vehicles parked in driveways and on the street, officials stated.
The best protection is to park vehicles in the garage whenever possible, officials said. Residents also can protect themselves by making sure everything of value is removed from their vehicles before they retire for the night.
That is a good practice, even if the car is parked in the garage, officials said.
The worst place to park a vehicle is on the street.
