Oak Ridge High School senior Vinayak Ramesh, 17, earned semifinal honors for his work on developing a mathematical algorithm for detecting dead spots in wireless networks. He said his research, which he conducted on his own from home, can be adapted for anything from Wi-Fi networks to cellular phone systems.
"I was really surprised. I just didn't expect this," Ramesh said of his award.
