The fast-casual Chinese food chain Pick Up Stix suddenly closed its eight Greater Sacramento restaurants this week.

The chain opened its first location hereabouts in the fall of 2002 in Roseville, followed quickly by locations in Folsom, El Dorado Hills, West Roseville and Elk Grove.

Each restaurant employed about 15 people.

All those stores, along with other locations in south Sacramento, Arden Arcade, North Natomas were closed in part of a move to focus on stronger markets during a period of a stressed economy, said owner Carlson Restaurants Worldwide Inc. in a prepared statement. Carlson is based in Carrollton, Texas.

In all, 26 stores were closed in California, Nevada and Arizona.

The company's concept is fast, fresh Chinese food cooked to order in high-traffic locations. Pick Up Stix, with headquarters in San Clemente, had about 100 locations until Wednesday.
